Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) Annual Statement 2026
Introduction
This Annual statement has been drawn up on 28/06/2026 in accordance with the requirement of the Health and Social Care Act 2008: code of practice on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance for Abbey Road Medical Practice. It summarises:
- Infection transmission incidents and actions taken
- IPC audits undertaken and subsequent actions implemented
- Risk assessments undertaken and any actions taken for prevention and control of infection
- Staff training
- Review and update of IPC policies, procedures and guidelines
- Antimicrobial prescribing and stewardship
- Significant Event and Complaints
This statement has been drawn up by Shynamma Roy, Practice nurse and Infection Prevent and Control (IPC) Lead.
- Infection transmission incidents- A patient vomited in the waiting area. The incident occurred during the normal clinic hours and was immediately addressed by staff to maintain a calm & safe environment for other patients and staff. Staff promptly responded to the situation by cleaning up the area thoroughly, ensuring that hygiene and safety maintained.
- IPC Audits and actions- Hand washing audits done every 3 months. New staff receive training in hand hygiene at induction. Every wash basin/sink has a poster for handwashing technique.
- Risk Assessments- Legionella risk assessment is carried out to ensure that the water has no risk of infection.
- Staff training- All staff are trained for infection control, and all are up to date with the training.
- IPC Policies, procedures and guidance – The IPC Policy is up to date and available to all staff. The policy is reviewed annually, and circulated among all staff and discussed at meetings annually.
- Antimicrobial prescribing and stewardship- An audit of antimicrobial prescribing was carried out in June 2026. It was found that although the overall prescribing of antibiotics was appropriate and within target, improvement needs to be made in the prescribing of the 5 day courses of amoxicillin.
- Significant Event and Complaints – There were no significant events and complaints received, related to IPC in the past year.
